Special School Projects

When it comes to teaching kids about nature, our experience and expertise in environmental and educational fields score top marks with teachers and students. Designed for elementary and secondary schools, our special projects bring the great outdoors into the classroom so that students gain firsthand knowledge about Mount Royal’s habitats, history and heritage. In so doing, we highlight the importance of caring for this spectacular natural setting at the heart of Montréal.

We develop our green projects in partnership with local schools, organizations and the Quebec Ministry of Education as a complement to our educational activities on the mountain.

Experimentation and observation throughout the seasons
From late September to late May

Led by Les amis de la montagne in partnership with the Société de verdissement du Montréal métropolitain (SOVERDI), this educational program promotes students’ contact with nature throughout the school year as they learn to grow saplings from seeds. Participants learn about the life cycle of trees as well as their role in the ecosystem and in the daily life of human beings. In the fall, students harvest tree seeds in Mount Royal Park. At the end of the winter, they plant seedlings in the classroom and care for them until May. In the spring, the small trees are transferred to the SOVERDI nursery at the MIL campus of the Université de Montréal, which the students visit with Les amis de la montagne. This program is made possible with the financial support of the Québec Forestry Industry Council. The number of participating groups is limited.

In light of the current global pandemic, Les amis de la montagne reserves the right to modify project activities according to most recent developments.
