Tribute to Mark London, Great Champion of Heritage and Mount Royal

It is with sadness that Les amis learned of the passing of Mark London, a long-time friend and supporter of Mount Royal.

Mark London was among the first citizens who mobilized in 1986 to prevent the construction of a mammoth telecommunications tower on Mount Royal that would forever change the landscape and unique character of the mountain. Committed to improving and keeping this precious heritage intact for current and future generations, Mark joined a small group of engaged citizens, which included Peter Howlett and Michel Famelart, who published a manifesto entitled“Mount Royal, Pride of Montreal.” This document lay the groundwork for Les amis de la montagne as an organization and inspired the Doré administration to create the first Mount Royal Protection and Enhancement Plan.
Architect and urban planner, Mark London was Executive Director of Héritage Montréal and member of the City of Westmount urban planning committee. Employed by the City of Montréal, he continued to advocate for the protection and improvement of Mount Royal’s natural and heritage qualities.
A visionary and a man of commitment and principles, he helped define and shape our beloved Mount Royal.
