New Entrance to Mount Royal Park

A brand-new entrance allows residents and visitors to access Mount Royal Park on the mountain’s western side via Côte-des-Neiges Rd. The repurposed area, a former limestone quarry, now showcases native vegetation, a rocky promontory, as well as a new staircase and paved way leading to Olmsted Path.
Project Overview
The Cedar / Côte-des-Neiges redevelopment project was carried out by the City of Montréal’s Department of Large Parks, Greening and Mount Royal as specified by the Mount Royal Protection and Enhancement Plan, which was adopted in 2009.
The objectives of this redevelopment were to improve accessibility, make the mountain more welcoming, highlight built and natural heritage as well as views and landscapes, and enhance biodiversity.
Our Role in the Project
Les amis de la montagne responded to the City of Montréal’s invitation to raise awareness and provide information throughout the Cedar / Côte-des-Neiges development project. We developed interpretative panels and our educators were on site to interact with the public on:

Our Role in the Project

- Park interventions and development projects
- The ecological management of vegetation and water drainage and the improvements made to the natural environment
- Improvements to park accessibility and visitor experience
- Temporary instructions imposed by the project and the importance of adhering to them in order to protect the mountain and its natural habitats
This major redevelopment embellished the area, but the benefits of such a project for the users of a large urban park like Mount Royal are wide and varied:
- Increasing the park’s surface area by 3,000 m2 thanks to the dismantling of the Cedar / Côte-des-Neiges access ramp and site greening
- Improving pedestrian safety
- Enhancing views through the development of a promontory and place of rest
- Reconfiguring paths to improve user experience
