Let’s talk garbage!

Mount Royal is one of Montréal’s most popular locations. Its urban forest faces natural threats as well as the impacts of park visitation by several million people each year. Improving the management of waste, recyclables and organic matter is an effective way to improve the resilience of its green spaces.

On January 20, 2020, Les amis de la montagne presented an innovative and efficient waste management plan for all Mount Royal parks. Les amis de la montagne would like for garbage removal to be adapted to best practices in trash management and recycling that take into account park attendance as well as environmental conservation requirements.
This brief was presented to members of the City’s Commission sur l’eau, l’environnement, le développement durable et les grands parcs.
Collectively, we can start implementing this vision today!
Les amis de la montagne was inspired by the zero waste movement adopted by the City of Montréal and the principles of the Leave No Trace program, which builds awareness, appreciation and respect for parks and wildlands.
Inspiring actions include:
Waste collection has evolved considerably in Quebec since the 1990s with the collection of household recyclables and, more recently, organic waste. Now more than ever before, the harmful effects of single-use plastics and the danger of certain materials for human health and the environment are better known. The importance of source reduction and valorization is on everyone’s lips.
Several cities have already taken action to this end and citizens have followed suit! Such actions help us become more considerate and aware of the choices to be made for our health, the planet and future generations.
With this awareness in mind, Les amis de la montagne proposes to extend waste management to public and green spaces. We share these values and hope to influence the waste management practices of all users of Mount Royal parks.
We are convinced that the success of this approach rests on our collective ability to raise awareness among park goers so that each and every one of us becomes an agent of change.

- Reducing at the source by avoiding individual packaging and bringing food in reusable containers.
- Carrying waste out.
- Disposing of waste properly in equipment provided for this purpose.
- Collecting trash found in nature.
- Getting involved in environmental stewardship initiatives such as the Mount Royal Clean-Up Day in May 2020.
