Les Amis’s initiatives bear fruit!

Discover the Rencontres des grands propriétaires institutionnels sur la gestion écologique de leur propriété and how our team plays a key role in mobilizing and bringing together major owners of properties in the institutional ring around Mount Royal.
Did you know that on December 1, 2020, Les amis de la montagne organized the first Rencontre des propriétaires institutionnels du mont Royal sur la gestion écologique de leur propriété? These sessions bring together representatives of institutions located around the mountain. The goal is to forge partnerships and promote informed decision-making, ultimately leading to the implementation of environmentally responsible actions on their properties. These local leaders are motivated to work together to maintain the mountain's ecosystems and biodiversity and to enhance its natural and cultural heritage.
The meetings are already bearing fruit and here are two examples:
The first Community of Practice (CoP) on ecological snow management was held on May 11, 2021. The institutional partners met with experts, community leaders and City of Montréal representatives to discuss challenges, issues and solutions inherent in snow management. After the CoP, Les amis produced a detailed report describing discussions and outlining a shared vision for ecological snow management on Mount Royal. The report includes five guiding principles, seven strategic orientations and several proposed courses of action. Les amis also applauded the major ecological projects undertaken by Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery. The Fabrique de la paroisse Notre-Dame de Montréal made an initial announcement to this effect in early May, mentioning the close collaboration with Les amis de la montagne and other institutional partners. They later publicized their intention to create four ecological spaces to improve habitats and biodiversity in collaboration with the Université de Montréal, the creation of Remembrance Grove for those who prefer a greener interment with a tree as a commemorative monument, and the implementation of a “Leave no trace” policy.
This renaturalization project will serve as a learning experience and inspiration for the next community of practice on the ecological management of the mountain's grassy areas.
