Les amis de la montagne inaugurates an exhibition celebrating the history of Montréal and the majestic Mount Royal Chalet

Les amis de la montagne invites the public to discover Montréal’s history by visiting an exhibition highlighting the collection of paintings on the walls of the majestic Mount Royal Chalet.
Until December, a series of installations and activities will showcase the 17 paintings depicting selected moments in the history of Montréal and New France, which were originally commissioned for the Chalet from well-known artists such as Marc-Aurèle Fortin, Paul-Émile Borduas and Edwin H. Holgate.

Designed by Les amis de la montagne in collaboration with the design and museography firm Umanium, the exhibition combines light shows, museum installations, videos and on-site activities at various times of the week to shed new light on special moments in the history of Montréal and contribute to the appreciation of the magnificent Chalet.
“The 375th anniversary is the perfect opportunity to showcase the rich cultural heritage of our beautiful city. I invite all Montrealers and visitors to discover these works of art that reveal the talent of our great painters and artists during their next visit to Mount Royal,” says Martin Coiteux, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy, Minister of Public Security and Minister responsible for the Montréal region.
“As part of Montréal's 375th anniversary, we invite Montrealers to come and enjoy this exhibition of paintings by renowned painters that recall the history of our city here in the heart of the Mount Royal heritage site. This multifaceted enhancement project spotlights the Chalet’s past and the importance of culture, heritage and nature to Montrealers,” adds Réal Ménard, City of Montréal executive committee member, responsible of sustainable development, the environment, large parks and green spaces.
The In the Footsteps of our Discoverers – The Remarkable History of Montréal exhibition is accessible free of charge during Mount Royal Chalet opening hours, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week, until December 15. Completing the exhibition, members of Les amis de la montagne’s team will be on hand to meet with the public every Thursday to Sunday, from 12 to 5 p.m., until September 3, and on Saturdays and Sundays, from 12 to 5 p.m., from September 10 to October 29.
A Cultural and Gourmet Breather at the Mount Royal Chalet
Topping off the Mount Royal Chalet public offer, Les amis de la montagne proposes the new Café des Amis food counter located at the back of the great hall known as the Salle des pas perdus. In the coming days, visitors to the mountain will be able to enjoy healthy snacks and beverages as they pause for a break at the Chalet. As part of an agreement with the City of Montréal, Les amis will operate three food services in Mount Royal Park—the food counter at the Chalet, the outdoor café at Smith House and the bistro at the Beaver Lake Pavilion—for the gourmet pleasure of visitors to the mountain.
In addition, “Special 375th” hour-long guided tours, departing from the Chalet on Thursdays and Saturdays until the end of October, will allow visitors to discover Mount Royal summit’s “must-see sites,” at the cost of $10 per adult and $5 for 8-12 year olds. “We are confident that the exhibition, new Café des Amis food counter and special discovery walks offered this year will add to the overall experience of visitors to Mount Royal Park. Our goal is to allow the public to fully appreciate the history and beauty of the Mount Royal Chalet and its lookout, and to make it a place of destination rather than a place of passage,” explains Sylvie Guilbaut, Executive Director of Les amis de la montagne.
