Les amis de la montagne receives the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects’ Community Service Award

Les amis de la montagne received the 2017 Community Service Award presented at the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) gala event held at Montréal’s Palais des Congrès as part of the Congress of the World Design Summit.
This recognition award is one of four given annually by the CSLA to honour the work and commitment of Canadians to the landscape architecture profession.
Les amis de la montagne is known for its hallmark grassroots approach, drawing its strength from the community’s desire to safeguard the mountain and advocating for enlightened action. People by the thousands – individuals who care about Mount Royal, other non-profit group representatives, heads of higher learning and health institutions, cultural and business community leaders, municipal staff and elected officials – are part of Les amis’s community, ensuring the protection and improvement of this iconic site that is the heart and green lung of Montréal.
“If Mount Royal remains so highly valued in the lives of Montrealers, it is thanks to the many people who have dedicated their focus, expertise and talent to it,” said Peter A. Howlett, C.M., founding president of Les amis de la montagne, as he accepted the award. “I’d like to highlight the exceptional contribution made by the profession represented by the CSLA, starting with the father of North American landscape architecture, the illustrious Frederick Law Olmsted who designed Mount Royal Park. Inspired by his vision, generations of landscape architects have worked for the benefit of our mountain.”
Acknowledging the close ties between Les amis de la montagne and members of the profession over the past three decades, Mr. Howlett went on to name a few individuals – Charles Beveridge, Pierre Bouchard, Daniel Chartier, Michel Devoy, Wendy Graham, Peter Jacobs and Ron Williams – who have distinguished themselves through their engagement towards Mount Royal, its improvement and governance, as well as its protection.
