Mount Royal: UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Les amis de la montagne is thrilled with Mount Royal’s application to be considered for inclusion on Canada’s Tentative List for World Heritage Sites. This is the first step towards Mount Royal’s possible recognition as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Les amis salutes Montreal mayor Denis Coderre’s commitment to Mount Royal. The UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription proposal is a rigorous process requiring, on the one hand, the demonstration of the site’s outstanding universal value and, on the other hand, the implementation of an exemplary management framework. Obtaining World Heritage Site status would ensure a higher level of protection for Mount Royal’s territory.
This process provides a unique opportunity for public authorities and the community to come together around a clear vision of the mountain’s future and to showcase this exceptional Montreal landmark on the world scene.

In the event that Mount Royal is selected to be included on Canada’s tentative list of sites, Les amis will give its full support to subsequent steps in preparing the proposal for the mountain to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site”,said Peter A. Howlett C.M., President of Les amis de la montagne.
Note that sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage List must meet at least one of 10 selection criteria, such as representing a work of a creative genius, natural phenomena or exceptionally beautiful and esthetically meaningful areas.
